Pharmacy Technician Program Pending American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Accreditation

What should I know about ASHP/ACPE Accreditation?

Career Step’s Pharmacy Technician program is one of the few online programs pending American Society of Health-System Pharmacists accreditation. The process of accreditation is designed to increase public safety as pharmacy technician programs adhere to a specific set of quality standards.

  • The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)/Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) has been accrediting pharmacy technician training programs since 1983. They are the only nationally recognized, non-governmental, non-profit pharmacy association accrediting pharmacy technician training programs in the US. In order to receive accreditation, programs must meet the quality standards established by ASHP.
  • Once Career Step receives final approval from ASHP, the credential will be backdated to apply to all students who completed our program.
  • Standards vary from state to state, so you should check your state requirements before signing up with a training program. Accreditation is a current requirement for some states.

What quality standards are necessary for accreditation?

Standards for accreditation, which are recommended by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Commission on Credentialing (COC), are designed to protect the public and promote improvement in pharmacy technician programs. You can read the full list of accreditation standards published by ASHP. Some of the updates to Career Step’s Pharmacy Technician program are highlighted below.

  1. The program has increased from 285 to 400 curriculum hours with additional hours for the externship.
  2. A 200- to 600-hour externship is now required for the course, depending on individual state requirements.
  3. Online simulations have increased to 100 hours.
  4. The sterile compounding unit has been expanded.
  5. Each student will receive a laboratory kit in order to complete hands-on experiences such as filling a prescription bottle. The laboratory kit will be shipped upon completion of the pharmaceutical calculations module.
  6. Students must complete a background check within 14 days of registration for the course.
